Shopping for a wedding gown is a dream come true for most women. This is sure to be an exciting time for you and yet also a little overwhelming. With thousands of dresses to choose from, finding the dress that is just right for you can be a bit of a challenge. Do not limit yourself by waiting too late to begin shopping. Start looking at least nine to twelve months prior to the wedding if at all possible. It is best to shop during off peak days and times as to get the most personal attention. Call the bridal salon in advance to set up an appointment. You will be assigned a specific salesperson who will work with you each time you go into the salon.

Be sure to take along the undergarments you plan to wear with your gown. You most likely will not have selected your shoes yet, but take shoes with approximately the same heel height as what you will be wearing. Be aware that you will be trying on sample dresses and the gown you order may be slightly different than what you see in the salon. Discuss with the salesperson what changes they normally see made.

Bring some trusted friends along with you whose opinions you value. However, it is best not to bring more than three people to the salons. Do not get caught up in the excitement and buy right away. If you find the dress that you think is right for you, go home and sleep on it before making the final decision.

The following are some questions you may want to ask the salesperson:

• Ask the salon’s policies regarding refund, cancellation or returns. You will be asked to place a substantial deposit on the gown when ordering which may be non-refundable.
• Will you be charged shipping costs?
• Who designed the gown?
• Can the style of the gown be altered, such as neckline, train, etc.?
• What are the costs of alterations?
• Is there a matching headpiece?
• Is there a discount if you order your bridesmaid’s dresses from the same salon?
