If you are the mother of the groom, you might be at a lost for exactly what your role is in the wedding planning process. However, there are a few important Etiquette tips to keep in mind. The following is a list of responsibilities:

  • As soon as you hear about the upcoming wedding, it is your responsibility to initiate conversation with the bride’s family. If you have never met them before, it is important for you to take the first step in introducing yourself. If you already know them, you can simply tell them how excited you are about the wedding. Either way, it is good etiquette to invite them to get together. If the parents live too far away for a friendly visit, a letter is always an appropriate way to express your feelings.

  • Give the bride a list of people you would like to invite to the wedding as soon as possible. This will help her get the invitations out on time. Also, always stick to the amount of guests that the bride requests. Also, it is your responsibility to accommodate any of your out of town guests.

  • Once the mother of the bride has selected a dress to wear to the wedding, choose a dress for yourself that will complement it. Never try to dress more formally then her, because that is considered poor etiquette. Also do not wear a dress that is the same color as the mother of the bride’s or the bridesmaids.

  • As the mother of the groom, it is your responsibility to host the rehearsal dinner. The dinner can either be held at a restaurant or at your home, but must include all members of the wedding ceremony and their spouses.

  • During the ceremony, your main responsibility will be to light the family candle on the alter along with the mother of the bride.
