The wedding cake has become a showpiece at a wedding reception. it may surprise you to learn however, that originally the wedding cake was not eaten, but thrown at the bride. The wedding cake was at one time a fertility tradition. Today, as couples cut a piece of cake and feed it to each other it symbolizes the support they are pledging to give each other as husband and wife.

Most wedding cakes still have the traditional look to them but often times the cake itself is not the traditional white cake we all remember. Today, you may bite into a piece of wedding cake to find that it is a chocolate cake with a mocha mousse, a pound cake with lemon or raspberry filling, or several other tasty choices. The icing may still be white, but often times it is now covered with flowers or may even have wedding cake charms scattered over the top.

Wedding cakes come in sizes that will feed 50 people to several thousand and can cost up to several thousand dollars. Begin shopping for the wedding cake at least three to four months prior to your wedding date. Your wedding cake can be ordered from a bakery, caterer, patisserie, or may even come with your reception package.
