The History of the Wedding Band

Although rings as a symbol of eternity can be traced back to the Egyptians, today’s wedding band tradition is closely linked to ancient Greek civilization. They believed the wedding ring finger was connected directly to the heart by what they called “the vein of love.” The Romans furthered the tradition when a gold ring represented marital love and commitment. Pope Nicolas I decreed that an engagement ring was required as a symbol of intent. He also required that rings be made of gold, which was symbolic of financial sacrifice on the part of the future husband. Men’s rings did not become commonplace until the 16th century, and the tradition was forever solidified in America after World War II.
