What are some alternatives for a DJ?

The first alternative to a DJ is the use of your own sound system and PA system. This ensures that the songs used will be exactly what you want, but it puts much responsibility into your court. With the advancement in portable MP3 capabilities and the ability to show power point presentations, this way of providing entertainment at a wedding reception has become easier and easier. You will also need to take control of the announcements. Asking one of your family members to help is an option, but once again the responsibility will be placed into a non-professional’s hands. At the same time this may make others feel more comfortable because they know the MC; plus it is severely less expensive than a DJ.

Another alternative is to hire a band. Many people are going this route to have a less “canned” sound in the moment. The band could be a 4-piece string quartet or a group of college students playing popular songs. This can be an expensive endeavor to undertake for you wedding, but provides something that many people will never forget. With this band scenario, you will also depend on the head of the band to be the MC for announcements, or you will have to have a separate person as the MC.
