What is Online Copy and why is it needed?

Before you can write copy you first have to know what it is. If you look at some sales copy you will notice big headlines or five-word blurbs. This is especially true for websites that have massive text that just has a few words, usually nothing of meaning, about their product. These site owners think this is eye catchy and helps grab their visitor’s attention. But what they don’t realize is it is doing the exact opposite. This does not qualify and is not copy. If you think that filling your home page with large text or vague headlines and expect this to sell for them, you are sadly mistaken. What you need is carefully constructed sales copy that will take your visitor by the hand and lead that person to the ordering process. To understand this more fully here are some things to know about web copy:

·        WITFM (What’s in it for me): The most widely thought of expression and a key factor to making money online is the concept of “what’s in it for me.” You see people come online for information. They aren’t necessarily going online to buy. So you need to condition their minds into believing that what you have to offer is valuable and is what they need now.
·        Short but sweet: The best way to write copy is by using short, compelling chunks of text that describe your product, and excite them with your offer. Each chunk will specify the benefits of each product so as to generate enough interest to convince your visitors to click for more info where they can read more fully about your offer.

It doesn’t matter how much graphics you have on your site, or how showy it is, the important thing is the copy. Even if you do have the greatest product in the world, without good copy it is meaningless.
