Days Three and Four

After day two sent you into Virginia, day three will return you to the city. You’ll start your day at the same place where the President starts his: the White House. Get your reservations from your Congressman and show up early to get on one of the morning’s first tours. You’ll spend the morning there and then walk up Connecticut Avenue to Dupont Circle where you can have an ethnic lunch.

After lunch, feel free to explore Dupont Circle, but then keep walking, either towards Georgetown or up Massachusetts Avenue to Embassy Row. Either way, you should be tired out by the mid-afternoon and ready to ride the Metro back to your hotel. Freshen up and then head out for dinner and a show at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. As an alternative, if you’re in town on a Friday, you can go the National Gallery of Art for live jazz.

Start out day four by taking the metro to Arlington National Cemetery. At the visitors’ center, you can pick up maps to all of the famous memorials, as well as directions to the graves of any of your relatives that are buried in the cemetery.

After a morning at the cemetery, cross back over the river and paddleboat on the Tidal Basin. As an alternative, you can take a river cruise down the Potomac; it’s a great idea, but you might need to scout out your options during days one and three. If you still have energy after your time on the water, you can visit any of the memorials you didn’t get to on day one.
