Our suggested itinerary for one day in DC required you to make some tough choices, but a second day in DC will eliminate those choices and let you see almost all of the big DC sights.

Get some breakfast at or near your hotel and then head downtown to the Washington Monument. Show up early and get an assigned time ticket. Then hike up the monument stairs and get some of the photographs of Washington. When you get back down to the bottom, stroll over to the White House, grabbing some lunch from a street vendor on the way. If you can tour the White House around noon (contact your Congressman beforehand for tickets), you’ll be out by the mid-afternoon. Then, stay on Pennsylvania Avenue and walk to Georgetown. Go in some shops, glance at Georgetown University, and look over the Potomac and then have a nice dinner.

Start day two at the U.S. Capitol. As with the White House, contact your Congressman beforehand and ask for a tour. If you get a 9:30 tour, you’ll be out by lunchtime. Grab some lunch at Tortilla Coast, along with lots of Congressman staffers and then relax over an ice cream on the National Mall. After lunch, head into one of the Smithsonian Museums that line the mall. You could spend days in the museums, but you only have an afternoon, so you’ll need to pick just one of the museums.

When you start to get hungry, check out your dinner options. Laboratorio del Galileo is one of the best, but you might not be feeling luxurious enough for that, so just get what looks good. Then, explore the memorials—Vietnam, Lincoln, and Jefferson are especially popular—by moonlight.
