Many United States citizens could probably tell you that the state capital of Virginia is Richmond, and – if pressed – they may also know that the state bird is the Cardinal. Residents of Virginia may know that the state tree and flower is the Dogwood. However, Virginia identifies itself with many more state associations, such as the state motto, the state dog, and other “state stuff.” Here are some of them:

• State motto: “Sic semper tyrannis,” which means “Thus always to tyrants.”
• State nickname: Old Dominion (which also has a university named after it).
• State flower: the Dogwood.
• State tree: also the Dogwood.
• State song: They don’t have one. The former state song “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” was retired in 1997 for possibly racially offensive lyrics.
• State dance: the Square Dance.
• State beverage: Milk.
• State bird: the Cardinal.
• State fish: the Brook Trout.
• State dog: the American Foxhound.
• State bat: the Virginia Big-Eared Bat.
• State shell: the Oyster shell.
