Day Two

Continue your way north to visit the village of Dorset. Filled with white-clapboard homes with green and black shutters, Dorset is American architecture at its best. It is not as outwardly impressive as Manchester, but charming in its own way instead.

After leaving Dorset, plan to spend the day exploring the Green Mountains. Spend some time driving route 100 for premier foliage viewing. If outdoor pursuits interest you, you will find them here: biking, camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing and more. You can spend your entire second day enjoying Vermont’s open air. Creative options include an Orvis Fly-Fishing Class or spending some time with the seasoned hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

If it is ski season, you might want to spend a day on the slopes. Killington is the king of Vermont’s ski country. It is large, bustling, efficient, and fun. There is a broad range of slopes for beginners on up. Some find the area to be far too touristy, and opt for ski towns with a more local flavor such as Mount Snow, Stowe or Sugarbush.

As you finish your day outdoors, plan to spend the night in one of the villages in the Southeastern part of the state. Try the Chesterfield Inn, a ten-minute drive east of Brattleboro, actually located in New Hampshire. There are 15 rooms, nine in the main inn and six in the nearby cottages. Eight of them have wood-burning fireplaces and all are spacious and comfortable. In the lovely village of Newfane is the Four Columns Inn. Sitting just off the town green, it is nestled at the foot of a 150-acre private mountain. Rates include a hearty breakfast and afternoon tea.
