This tower is owned by the National Trust as it is a major landmark for the city.

It was built 1000 years ago and was used by William the Conqueror to prevent any incoming attacks from other parts of the country. It still stands today and as it located on the hill you cannot fail to miss it but at the same time it is a breathtaking site.

The tower is not very large but it is open to the public for viewing and as long as you don’t mind steps up the large hill, the tower is a great site and it will be enjoyed by all that visit it. It really has a history to shout about.

Top Fact: The original Clifford’s Tower was built out of timber and an attack from a local mob in 1190 resulted in it being burnt down. It was subsequently rebuilt out of the stone and this is the important landmark you can see today. It may not be the original Clifford’s Tower but the natural history behind it cannot be escaped.
