At the end of 1862, Derbyshire as a whole was to see a major slump in the production and sales of lead throughout the country and very slowly mines started to close. Many people lost their jobs from what was originally a very prosperous practice.
By 1939, there was just one mine remaining, Millclose Mine, it happened to be the largest in the county but its fate was sealed at the end of 1939 when a major flood caused it to be closed forever and over 600 people lost their jobs due to the mines closure.
