Exploring the Caverns

With Derbyshire, you will find plenty of caverns that are available to explore on guided trips and this was due to the once prosperous mining community.

One place I highly recommend is the Heights of Abraham, it starts with a ride to the top in a cable car (if you’re not scared of heights) then once at the top you sit through a video presentation and then the highlight is entering the caverns. You will be taken through with a guide who will explain the history of the cavern and how people once lived, there are stairs so if you are unable to walk well then seek advice first.

It is one place you can spend the day as it also has gifts shops and cafes but the best experience of the whole trip is the view once you leave the cavern. Ending up on beautiful hills you will overlook many great sites and it makes an excellent photo opportunity.

Top Tip: Some caverns may be quite constricted and not for people who panic in such situations so before booking a trip, I would ask if there are any tight spaces and how many stairs are in the trip because some older people may not be able to handle the task. It pays to ask ahead and another factor is that these trips are always popular so where possible, book in advance if you can.
