What is harassment training?

Harassment training is training that teaches employees how to recognize and respond to harassment on the job. Hopefully, harassment training will deter some would-be harassers, but it will at least teach employees how to recognize harassment and enable them to know what to do when workplace harassment occurs.

Harassment creates what is known as a hostile work environment. Employees who are in a hostile work environment are extremely criticized, threatened, embarrassed, or made uncomfortable in some way that leaves them unable to do their job at the optimum level. The most common kind of harassment is sexual harassment, but many other kinds of harassment, from religious harassment to harassment by customers, exist at the workplace.

Like all kinds of training, harassment training may be in the form of a video, pamphlet, lecture, seminar, or any other format. Many companies provide harassment training as part of new employee orientation, while others may periodic provide employees with information on harassment. In many cases, managers and supervisors receive additional training to ensure that they are prepared to deal with complaints. Regardless of the from harassment training takes, the training not only serves to help employees prevent and respond to harassment, it indicates to employees that the company has a no-tolerance policy on discrimination and harassment.
