How do I promote my Conference or Event?

There are many ways to promote your event, regardless of your budget. The key to promotion is finding your audience. Who am I trying to reach and what's the best way to reach them? All of your efforts will get you nowhere if you are spending your time and energy inviting teachers to a medical conference.

E-mail can be effective for some audience, but consider that with spam filters and full inboxes, the invitation or promotional e-mail might never be read. Follow up your e-mails with paper invitations sent via regular mail. If you require RSVPs, be prepared to call those people who you do not get responses from.

Direct mail can be an effective means of contacting people if you have access to a mailing list. Also consider advertising in key publications that will reach your intended audience. Press releases also can be effective in garnering media attention in advance of your event.

Of course, sometimes word of mouth is the most effective strategy, coupled with other more formalized efforts. A personal face-to-face invitation can make the difference in someone's decision about whether to attend your event. Encourage those who have attended your event or conference in the past to invite new people.
