Sanuk means “fun” in Thai. It is a very important cultural value. Any endeavor or activity needs to be fun. This means songs, games, laughing, music or food. Certainly the country is highly productive in its work, but the workers have a happy-go-lucky sense about them that makes the workplace not so demanding and dreary. This is true in factories and in the rice fields. The Western mind is often focused on getting the task accomplished. The Thai person cares about what the experience is like getting the task accomplished. For example, one westerner (called a farang in Thai) needed to go to the grocery store and was perfectly content to drive twenty minutes by herself, get all the items in a systematic way and return home a couple of hours later. The Thai friend, however, could not imagine why anyone would want to go to the grocery store by herself. It seemed way too lonely and boring!
