Approximately seventy-five percent of the population is Thai, while about fourteen percent are Chinese. The rest are from other ethnic backgrounds, including Malay and Indian. Slightly less than ninety-five percent of the people are Buddhist. A little over four percent are Muslim. The other one percent of the population includes Christians and other religions. The Government of Thailand is a constitutional monarch. The country’s beloved king is King Bhumibol, who is currently the world’s longest serving monarch. The head of the government is the prime minister. The legislative branch of the government includes a House of Representatives, with five hundred members and a Senate, with two hundred members. The prime minister is selected from the House of Representatives following national elections, which are held every six years. There is also a judicial branch. The members of the Supreme Court are chosen by King Bhumibol. Bangkok has been the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand since 1800.
