Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia. Neighboring countries include Myanmar (Burma) to the west, Laos and Cambodia on the east, and Malaysia to the south. The Andaman Sea forms the western edge of Thailand’s southern isthmus while the South China Sea forms the Gulf of Thailand. Part of the northern boundary is formed by the Mekong River. The country is 198,404 square miles with a population of about 65 million. By comparison, the country of France has a slightly larger in its land size and slightly smaller in its population. The central region is characterized by plains, while the Korat Plateau is located in the northeastern region. Mountainous areas are found in the north, between the central plains and Korat Plateau and in western and southern regions as well. The highest point in elevation in Thailand measures 8449 feet.
