Some of the earliest evidence of civilization in Thailand has been found on the Korat Plateau near Nakon Ratchasima at Ban Chiang. Artifacts suggest these inhabitants lived there over 4,000 years ago. Both Indian and Chinese migrated to the land now known as Thailand prior to the Christian era: the Khmer people settled in the areas close to what is now known as Cambodia on the eastern part of present day Thailand. The Mon established themselves in the central and northern areas of present day Thailand.
