Thailand is filled with resorts that allow you to unwind and forget all your cares and worries. Krabi and Koh Phi Phi offer some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Also in southern Thailand, Phuket is a very popular beach as well as Koh Samui and surrounding islands. On the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samet and Koh Chang are popular with both foreign and national tourists. Pattaya is a former “rest and relaxation” destination from the Vietnam War and still attracts the party crowd with accommodations in all price ranges. Hua Hin is a favorite beach with Thais as it is also the location of the summer palace of King Bhumibol. For those who love the outdoors but not necessarily the beach, Thailand has many wonderful national parks. The most well known and popular park is Khao Yai, which means “big mountain”. Located about 3 hours northeast of Bangkok, Khao Yai has tremendous diversity of both plant and animal life. Birdwatchers, in particular, find Khao Yai a great destination. One of Thailand’s most luxurious resorts is located in northern Thailand: the Regent Chiang Mai. Rooms start around $500 (USD) a night. The resort offers a cooking school with weeklong classes for a couple of thousand dollars. Spas are opening up all over Thailand. Some of the notable ones are found in the middle of busy Bangkok: the Oriental Hotel is one of the world’s top rated spas. Cha-am and other areas in and near Hua Hin also offer many spa retreats. The Chiva-Som resort is very well known. It should be noted that excellent golf courses are found all over Thailand. In fact, Thailand is a popular golfing destination for Japanese and other Asians from regions where the sport is a bit pricier.
