A Walk through Thai History

Thailand’s rich cultural heritage can be seen and enjoyed in areas all over Thailand. The Khmer ruins at Phimai (near Nakorn Ratchasima) show the craftsmanship in stone sculpture and design of the fortified town. Other Khmer influences are found at Muang Singh in Kanchanaburi and in the three-spired shrines at Lop Buri. For those who love such archeological treasures, a trip to Ayutthaya is a must. The city was one of the premier civilizations from the mid-fourteenth century to the mid-eighteenth century. The city was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, but the ruins give a glimpse of the splendor of this important city in Thai history. Other archeological sites can be found near Sukhothai and Kanchanaburi.

More recent historical treasures in Thailand include the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The palace was built by Rama I and construction began in 1782. The vast compound contains several buildings in traditional Thai and European architectural styles. Wat Phra Kaew is located on the grounds and is home to the famous Emerald Buddha, a treasure from the 15th century that is actually made out of jade. Other temples are scattered around the city that are popular with both local Thais and tourists, including Wat Pho (the Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (the Temple of the Dawn). Hundreds of other temples are found in Bangkok as well as across the country in the cities and small farming communities. Each has its own unique history. Besides temples, Bangkok has a National Museum and National Gallery. Many of the other larger cities across Thailand have museums for the public to enjoy.
