To see Thailand without all the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, take a quick flight to Chiang Mai and enjoy a few days visiting this favorite location of many tourists. Some airlines fly directly to Chiang Mai, especially if you are coming from another Southeast Asia country. Here are some ideas of how to spend your time in Chiang Mai:

• An Elephant farm is located about thirty miles north of the city and is a fun place to see elephants work and place. There are also elephant treks available with overnight stays possible.
Mountain biking, whitewater rafting and trekking are all available near Chiang Mai.
• Visiting the various tribal peoples in the area around Chiang Mai is wonderful way to see other cultures and ways of life. The Hmong, Mien, Lisu, Akhu and Karen are some of the hill tribes that live in the vicinity of Chiang Mai. You can visit the Tribal Museum if you are unable to visit the actual tribal villages.
• The Orchard and Butterfly Farm is popular with those who love wildlife.
• Doi Suthep is probably the most famous temple in Chiang Mai. It is located on the northeastern side of the city and features a steep, 290 step staircase.
• Lots of furniture, wood products and pottery that are sold worldwide are manufactured in Chiang Mai. Celadon pottery and teak furniture is especially beautiful and abundant. Some factories and show houses are on the outskirts of town as well as down town.
• The Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai is the perfect way to end any of the day-long excursions mentioned above. The night market is filled with all kinds of wood products and handicrafts, fabrics and clothing, silver jewelry and so forth. If you need a gift for a friend back home, this is the place to shop.
