Bangkok is filled with many beautiful temples that attract thousands of visitors a year. The most famous temple is found on the grounds of the Grand Palace, the former residence of the monarchy. This temple, Wat Phra Kaew, is home to the Emerald Buddha, a sacred image to Thais that has been known to exist since the 15th century. The buildings and grounds of the Grand Palace are a must see with its elaborate architecture and landscaping. Other famous temples include Wat Pho, home to the massive reclining Buddha and Wat Traimit, home to the Golden Buddha. Other well-known temples are located in the city and can be visited.
Besides temples, tourist love to visit the floating markets located near Bangkok. This is a journey back to “how it once was” all over the city of Bangkok before the system of canals and waterways were turned into roads. At the floating market, visitors ride on long, narrow boats with guides that negotiate sometimes crowded canals with vendors selling their wares from their own boats. You may not actually do a lot of shopping, but you will come away with a taste of Thai history and some great pictures.
Other great places to visit include the ancient city of Ayuthaya, the ancient city located north of Bangkok that is filled with ancient ruins and museums; Chinatown, which offers a wide variety of restaurants and markets; and many great museums, such as the National Museum, that highlight Thai history and culture.
