Bangkok’s economy relies heavily on exports. Recent years have seen significant growth in the area’s economy, and Thailand, as a whole, has recovered from the financial crisis of 1997-98. Some of the industries include textile and garments, agricultural processing, small electronics, jewelry, computers and computer parts, automobiles and automotive parts, tungsten and tin, cement, beverages, plastics and furniture. Bangkok is considered to have a well developed infrastructure and policies that promote investing and trade. The country has a high literacy rate and a unemployment rate of less than two percent. Less than ten percent of the population live below the poverty line.

Bangkok has a number of private and public universities. Kasetsart University is an agricultural university located near Don Muang Airport. Ramkhamheang University is the largest university, while Chulalonghorn is probably the most prestigious. There are countless trade schools and technical schools as well. University students are found all over the city with their groups of friends, especially in malls and on buses, wearing white shirts and black pants or skirts. School children are easy to spot in their white shirts and khaki shorts (boys) or white shirts and navy skirts (girls).
