The highlight of your second day will include a trip to a floating market and the Rose Garden. It is best to arrange a trip with a touring company to go to a floating market, since most are located out of the city. You will save time and energy this way! The most famous market is called Damnoen Saduak. It is located about sixty miles from Bangkok. The floating markets open very early in the morning and close by ten in the morning, so if you go with a tour company, be prepared to leave early. The trip will put you right among the scenes that you have probably seen in many postcards or other photographs of Thailand: long boats and canoes filled to capacity with brightly colored fruits such as bananas, guavas, lychee, mango, oranges and pineapples. And because it is a tourist attraction, there is bound to be a friendly man walking around with a huge python who will let you take a picture with it around your neck for a small fee. Going up and down the crowded canals, or klongs as they are known to Thais, is a perfect way to see the how Thais lived many, many years ago, and yet still operate in their daily life as far as trade and commerce is concerned.
Most tour trips include another stop. One popular option is the Rose Garden. This is part cultural center, part living museum. Featured at the Rose Garden is a display of a Thai wedding, a Thai boxing demonstration as well as a performance of working elephants. The Rose Garden is a great way to see many aspects of Thai culture and history in a relatively brief amount of time. There is the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo located close to the Rose Garden that not only has elephant shows but crocodile “round ups”. Beautiful flowers, including roses and orchids as well as exotic birds will be enjoyed in these venues as well.
Another option to combine with a trip to the floating market is a trip to the Bridge over the River Kwae and the infamous Death Railroad. This historic World War II memorial ground includes a P.O.W. cemetery.
Yet another option to consider in planning a trip to the floating market is a biking tour. Such tours take you through smaller villages and the agricultural regions outside of the city, as well as on paths along canals.
A trip to a floating market combined with a trip to the Rose Garden, Elephant Farm, the Bridge over the River Kwae or a Biking Tour will run you between fifty and one hundred dollars for the full day with a reputable touring company. Different packages include different things, such as meals, necessarily gear and so forth, so be sure to inquire about everything your tour includes.
