Day Three

Day Three is all about the Sky Train! The monorail system, opened in the late nineties, has changed the way you can see and enjoy Bangkok. Even if you get on the Train and ride from one end to the other, both north and south and east and west, it is a great way to see the city. One to three day passes are available for under eight dollars.

If you are visiting on the weekend, start early (the train runs from 6 am to 12 pm) by heading on the north line to the Mo Chit Station. Get off and follow the crowds to the Chatujak Weekend Market. This is bargain (and bargaining) shopper’s heaven. You’ll find electronics, clothes, antiques, and all kinds of Thai handicrafts. You could easily stay all day, but when you’ve had your fill, head back south on the Sky Train. Transfer to the West bound train (On Nut) and get off at the Chitloam exit. Lots of nice shopping and good food is found in this area. Or , you could find much of the same at the Siam Station right before the Chitloam one. If you are craving western food, some well known American eating establishments are found in these areas. If you were not able to make it to Chatujak Market, but you want to find some souvenirs, then check out Nayra Phand shopping center adjacent to the Gaysorn Mall (Chitlloam exit). After you have eaten and maybe shopped a little more, head east on the Sky Train and get off at the National Stadium Exit. Take a tour at the Jim Thompson house and see this incredible example of Thai architecture as well as learn about the man who helped revive the Thai Silk industry in the 1960’s. Finally, to end your day, get back on the train and continue your journey east to the river. Visit the Oriental Hotel and see the firsthand one of the top rated hotels in the world. Enjoy a meal at the Oriental or nearby Shangri-La, or arrange to dine divinely on a sunset dinner cruise.
