Start the day out with a hearty breakfast and good, strong Asian coffee. If you are staying at one of the nicer hotels, there is probably a scrumptious breakfast buffet included in the price of your stay. Though jet lag may tempt you to sleep all day and stay up all night, it is best to get up and get going early on the first day of your stay in Thailand. Dressed in comfortable shoes and comfortable, but modest clothing, the first day highlights include a tour of temples. The possibilities of temples to visit are endless, including the following ones: Wat Phra Kaew, on the grounds of the Grand Palace and home to the Emerald Buddha; Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of the Dawn with its majestic pagondas; Wat Po, where you will find the massive Reclining Buddha; Wat Mahathat, an important center for Buddhism Studies; Wat Tramit, which is home to a very large and tall Buddha image; Wat Sutat, where you will find the Great Swing; and the Golden Mount, or Wat Saket. Visiting all of these temples in one day is probably very impractical. Several are located fairly close together, including Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Not too far from these temples is the National Museum. Since this area is close to the Chao Praya River, you may consider a trip to the Royal Barge Museum or a dinner cruise to end your day.
If you are a low budget traveler and you are staying in the popular Khao Sand Road area, then you are very close to these attractions. Plenty of restaurants are easily accessible as well. If you prefer a nicer hotel, staying in the Riverside area or the Siam Square area is fairly accessible to these attractions. You will most likely need to get to the area via taxi. Once there, it is possible to do a walking tour around the Grand Palace, Wat Po and several other temples. You will need to take a river taxi if you want to see the Temple of the Dawn, or Wat Arun. It would be very important to get a good map and guidebook to the area, or, you may prefer to arrange a tour with an English speaking tour guide. If you are on your own, be mindful of friendly and well-dressed men who will try to get you to go look at jewelry to buy or go on tours that you had not planned to go on. These types of people can get you off your schedule for the day, and behind your back, get compensated by shop owners for bringing you to their store.
