In 1691 San Antonio, Texas, was discovered when Spanish explorers and missionaries came across a river on St. Anthony’s Day and named the river after the saint. The actual founding date of the city itself is 1718, when Father Antonio Olivares established a mission there. Over 100 years later, in 1836, the city became forever-known as “The Alamo,” when 189 defenders held the mission against about 4,000 Mexican soldiers for about two weeks. Later, during the Texas revolution of Mexico, the Texans rallied around the battle cry, “Remember the Alamo!” Today you can visit the Alamo Shrine and Museum right downtown.
