The bluffs on the rambling Mississippi river where Memphis is located have been inhabited for thousands of years, first by the mighty mound builders of the Mississippian culture, then by the Spanish, French and finally Americans. Memphis is a city filled with tremendous history and controversy all woven in a rich tapestry that has become a diverse and culturally broad city for those who call it home. There are actually many “mini-histories” that could be written about Memphis and all of the many cultures who have made it what it has become today. After being founded in the early 1800’s by Andrew Jackson, it later became the home of the blues in the twentieth century and later rock and roll when Elvis Presley took it as his home. Memphis today is a thriving city of one million inhabitants, rich with history and full of a multitude of opportunities for adventures at every turn.
