Switzerland has been home to many famous writers, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Gottfried Keller, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Jeremias Gotthelf, Charles Ferdinand Ramuz, and Jacob Burckhardt. During the 18th century, Coppet’s house of Germaine de Staël was a center for European literary masters. Other Swiss writers include Hermann Hess and Carl Spitteler, both Nobel Prize winners. Swiss playwrites Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Max Frisch made an impression on the literary world in the 20th century. Cartoon character Globi is popular in children’s culture.
