Like many European countries, Switzerland celebrates many of the same holidays as we do in America. Following is a list of Switzerland’s public holidays and which parts of the country celebrate them:

• January 1 – New Year’s Day – all of Switzerland
• January 2 – Saint Berchtold – only some cantons
• January 6 – Epiphany – only some cantons
• March 19 – Saint Joseph’s Day – Catholic regions only
• Good Friday – all of Switzerland except two cantons
• Easter - all of Switzerland
• Easter Monday - all of Switzerland except one canton
• May 1 – May Day – only some cantons
• 40 days after Easter – Ascension Day - all of Switzerland
• 50 days after Easter – Pentecost - all of Switzerland
• Monday after Pentecost – Whit Monday - all of Switzerland except one canton
• 61 days after Easter – Corpus Christi – Catholic regions only
• June 29 – St. Peter and St. Paul – one canton only
• August 1 – Swiss National Day - all of Switzerland
• August 15 – Assumption of Mary – Catholic regions only
• Third Sunday in September – Swiss federal day of prayer - all of Switzerland except one canton
• November 1 – All Saints Day – Catholic regions only
• December 8 – Immaculate Conception – Catholic regions only
• December 25 – Christmas - all of Switzerland
• December 26 – St. Stephen’s Day – only some cantons
• December 31 – New Year’s Eve – one canton only
