Swedish cuisine is by most accounts pretty laid back and simple. The term Swedish smorgasbord is common through out the world and comes from the Swedish words smorgas which means open sandwich and board which means table. Smorgasbord doesn’t necessarily refer to a sandwich only meal. It really means that there are several smaller items that you can choose from. A typical Swedish smorgasbord might have items such as Swedish meatballs, pickled herring, salmon pies, and different salads. There are several traditional Swedish favorites such as hot dogs or korviosk from hot dog stands that are either fried or boiled. Another favorite meal is pea soup and pancakes eaten for dessert. Pytt i panna is another Swedish specialty. It consists of fried meat, onions, and potatoes hashed together and is served with fried eggs and picked red beets.
