Just as they are in America sports are a large part of the Swedish culture. Although one difference is that unlike in America the sports in Sweden are not apart of the country’s public school systems. Track and football (soccer) are the two most popular sports in Sweden. Tennis is also huge in Sweden with several big name tennis stars like Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, and Stefan Edberg all hailing from Sweden. Another well known world athlete that is from Sweden is female golfer Annika Sörenstam who was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame in 2003. Ice hockey is also a very popular sport in Sweden. There are both men’s and women’s ice hockey teams in the country. Cross country skiing is also extremely popular in Sweden. The country is home to the largest cross country race in the world each year Vasaloppet which has on average of 12,000 participants competing. Boating and sailing are also regular pastimes for many Swedes. Fishing is another sport that has a large following in Sweden. Fishing is a sport that is passed down from generation to generation at a young age in Sweden. The country has rivers, lakes, streams and of course the Baltic Sea all of which have an abundance of fish. Popular American sports such as football, basketball, and baseball can be found in areas of the country and they are gaining a following in but still are not widely played at this time.
