During the 17th century Sweden was engaged in wars against Denmark-Norway, Russia, and Poland all of which it won. Winning these wars subsequently established Sweden as a powerful country. Treaties that were signed in the years of 1645 and 1658 which gave Sweden power over several provinces in both Denmark and Finland. Sweden also gained power and ruled over Ingria, Estonia, Livonia, as well as several regions of Germany. Sweden ruled as a great power until The Great War of 1700 when Russia, Saxony-Poland, and Denmark-Norway all banded together to attack Sweden. Sweden was triumphant in early battles until the king, King Charles XII who planned to invade Moscow and over take it was shot in Norway in the year of 1718. After the death of King Charles XII peace treaties were signed and Sweden’s reign as a major power was over.

In 1813 Sweden united against Napoleon and a treaty was signed giving Sweden power over Norway. Norway however revolted and declared its independence. At this time Sweden invaded Norway as a way to enforce the treaty and a brief war was fought. At the end of the war a peaceful union was established between Sweden and Norway.
