During the middle to late 1800’s Sweden saw a large portion of its population immigrate to the United States about 1 million people to be exact left the country during this time. The 19th century in Sweden brought about free enterprise, voting reforms, and the implementation of a national military. The three major political parties were also established during this time. They are the Social Democrat, Liberal, and Conservative parties.
Sweden remained neutral during and also following World War I. This was a prosperous time for the country because there was a world wide demand for several of Sweden’s industrial materials such as steel, ball bearings, wood pulp, and matches. During World War II Sweden followed a policy of armed neutrality. The country did not actively participate in the war but did allow both the United States and Germany access to the country for numerous war activities such as spying and transporting soldiers.
Today Sweden remains neutral and is not aligned with any other nation or country. In 1995 it joined the European Nation. At the current time the European Nation has 25 democratic countries as members.
