» 1600-1800
Between 1600 and 1800 Sweden rose to a major European power. From 1610 to 1680 the population of Stockholm grew to be six times its previous size. During this time Ostermalm and Kungsholmen were added to the country. Stockholm grew to be so large, that it became the official capital of Sweden. Swedish citizens soon developped trading rules which gave them a monopoly over trade between foreign merchants.
From 1713-1714, however, Stockholm was struck by the Black Death, a plage that was killing millions all over Europe. After the Great Northern War, Stockholm was in trouble. Population had ceased to grow and the economic growth slowed. However, it was still the political center of Sweden.
