When some people think about spending time in the mountains over the summer, things like hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities come to mind. However, few realize the many water activities that are possibilities in the mountains. "After all, it's the mountain's, not the beach." Oh, how wrong they are!

Though your options may vary per vacation locale, mountain water possibilities could possibly include beaches, marinas, rivers, and/or water parks. If water's your thing, your mountain vacation in the summer is sure to be fun-filled and unforgettable. Fill your time with activities like -

Boating. As opposed to sports activities like fishing or waterskiing in which boats are used, the recreational activity of boating is all about the ride itself, enjoying the travel by boat for its innately relaxing and yet stimulating qualities.
• Canoeing. Paddling a canoe can be a challenge; yet its semi-slow and smooth motion as it's being propelled makes it thoroughly enjoyable and a great way to de-stress. Individuals canoe to get away and just relax; families canoe together in hopes of quality time; and teams compete in canoe races.
• Jet Skiing. Though the term "Jet Ski" really refers to a brand of personal watercraft driven by water jets, it's a word that has become popularly used to define these fast-moving and exciting recreational vehicles. They are also known by another brand name - Sea-Doo.
Kayaking. Kayaks - much like canoes though built differently and propelled by different types of paddles - have been around for a long time and are now designed for a variety of uses. Recreational kayaks are generally used by casual kayakers who are looking for a serene paddle out on the lake, unusual photography opportunities, or even fishing. Whitewater and surf kayaks are made from a tough plastic and are designed to be much more maneuverable and ready for competitions. Racing kayaks are thin and quite lightweight. Inflatable kayaks are perfect for kids and travelers just looking for a little transportable fun.
• Whitewater Rafting. Rafting is really a sport about control rather than making something happen. As an inflatable raft moves (often quite crazily) down a river or other rapids, individuals in the raft use paddles to steer and try to keep themselves on the right track and in the boat. This can be incredibly fun and great for groups, but it also has serious dangers is safety precautions are not carefully observed. Wear lifejackets, and follow all instructions to ensure that rafting is only and completely fun.
• Sailing. Another recreational activity really about control, sailing is an art which many people enjoy. With great skill, individuals control the motion of the small boat and maneuver it in whatever sea and wind conditions they come up against.
• Tubing. This thrill of a ride is loved by vacationers of all ages, especially for the challenge of staying on the float. A tube (usually a specially designed tube rather than a small inner tube) is connected to a boat and towed along in the water, often treacherously skipping and turning across the wake in the water. Many people go tubing behind motorboats or jet skis.
• Water Skiing. Though two skis are the norm in this fun recreational experience, there are many different water skiing techniques. In all of them, a boat pulls a skier behind at relatively high speeds, while the skier holds only a rope with a handle. Generally, the slower the towing boat moves, the more difficult it is for the skier to stay up; of course the faster they move, the more confidence is needed. Water skiing can be quite a thrill and a fabulous way to have some summer fun in the water while visiting the mountains.
