• Size: South Carolina has a total area of 31,189 square miles. Ninety six percent of that is land mass. It is the 41st largest state.
• Highest Point: Sassafras Mountain is South Carolina’s highest point at 3,560 feet. It is located in Pickens, SC. Whitewater Falls, near the summit of the mountain, is the highest vertical waterfall in the eastern United States. The Raven Cliff Falls in Greenville County are longer, but not as vertical. They span a 400 foot drop.
• Low Country: The low country of South Carolina is the area along the coast from Pawley’s Island to the Savannah River. It is called the low country because it is referencing those cities that are either at or below sea level. This territory even has its own style of cuisine called low country
• Largest City: South Carolina’s largest city is its capital, Columbia. It is located essentially in the center of the state. Columbia was named after Christopher Columbus and was South Carolina’s first planned city, meaning it had wider streets arranged in a grid pattern. It was the second planned city in all of the United States.
• Most Popular City: Charleston is by far South Carolina’s most popular city for tourism. There are many historic landmarks in the city as well as beautiful beaches just out of town.
• Beaches: South Carolina has 182 miles of ocean front beaches. Some of the favorites are Kiawah Island, Myrtle Beach, Edisto Island, Folly Beach, Wild Dunes, Bulls Island, Isle of Palms, Seabrook Island, Fripp Island, and Hilton Head Island.
• Recreational Opportunities: South Carolina offers many fun opportunities. Other than her natural recreational features, South Carolina has a multitude of golf courses- 100 just along the Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand! Also, Paramount Carowinds Amusement Park is along the South Carolina/North Carolina border. The National Heritage Corridor of South Carolina is an area that spreads from the foothills of Oconee County in northwest South Carolina to Charleston in the southeast. It runs along the Savannah River and there are some scenic back roads drives along the corridor. The Discovery Route is a romantic ride from Charleston to mountain mill towns. There are many unique stops along that drive. Also, there is the Nature Route of the historic Corridor where you can view unspoiled beauty.
