Today, the slower pace common in the deep South is infused in every aspect of the city of Charleston. The lifestyle here is defined by history, cultural awareness, delicious regional cuisine and Southern hospitality. The city offers several museums with highly acclaimed art and history collections, 18th century homes, plantations that are still lived in, over 175 churches and a famous city market that every Charleston citizen takes pride in.
There aren’t skyscrapers in Charleston; instead the historic downtown skyline is full of antebellum architecture and historic church steeples. There are over 600 buildings built before the 1840’s that are still standing. Adding to the authenticity of the city’s charm is the fact that many of the residents of the area are descendents of the original settlers and they keep their treasured Southern traditions alive and well.
Although history abounds in Charleston, the area is not devoid of contemporary indulgences. Theater, dance, music and visual arts are heralded here, so much so that they are put on display during the internationally acclaimed Spoleto Festival each year. The city is full of chic boutiques, a few modern hotels and world-renowned chefs to ensure all of your sense will be delighted. Charleston offers higher education in the four different colleges and universities they offer. The College of Charleston was the country’s first university.
