If there is one thing that Charleston excels in, it is preserving their history and interpreting it through their attractions, restaurants and accommodations. For some old world charm, pick one of these historic hotels for an authentic experience.
· Anchorage Inn: Located in the heart of the historic district, this Inn was originally a cotton warehouse built in the 1840’s that has been transformed into a hotel with a 17th-century decor. Each room is a bit different in its shape and size, and very few rooms have views since there weren’t windows in the original warehouse, which can actually be beneficial in the hot Charleston summers. The Inn serves a continental breakfast and afternoon tea, and offers babysitting and laundry services. Rates start at $89 - $189.
· Philip Porcher House: This bed and breakfast is a restored 1770 Georgian home located in the historic district and faces two beautiful churches. It is within easy walking distance to several antique shops, fine dining as well as museums and attractions. The beautiful oak paneling lends nicely to the antique-laden interior with 18th-century engravings. This accommodation received Travel and Leisure magazine’s award for “Top Ten Bed and Breakfasts.” Rates start at $250.
· Inn at Middleton Place: This inn is set adjacent to the 18th century plantation which is a popular attraction among tourists, but this accommodation is a modern counterpart that has won architectural accolades for its contemporary design. Located on the bluffs of the Ashley River, the Inn offers scenic views, nature expeditions and educational experiences for all ages. There are gardens, a historic home functioning as a museum and stable yards that tell the story of the Old South. The guest rooms are large with an inviting interior and the Inn’s restaurant should definitely be visited even if you are not staying in the hotel. Rates start at $170.
· Planters Inn: Located next to the City Market, this convenient Inn was renovated in 1990 and transformed into a cozy and beautiful location bursting with Colonial charm. One of the finest accommodations in the South, the lobby welcomes visitors with 18th-century décor. The guestrooms are donned with hardwood floors, marble bathrooms and award-winning furnishings. The restaurant, Peninsula Grill, is also highly recommended. Rates start at $195.
