How hard am I willing to work toward a goal that might not come true for years?

  • Am I able to live with irregular income? Do I have other financial resources?
  • Do I have access to health insurance?
  • How do I handle failure? Am I able to easily pick myself up and move on?
  • Do I believe in my skills and business?
Once you have honestly asked yourself these questions, talk with people who know you well and ask them to answer the questions about you. Ask them if they see any “fatal flaws” in you that could keep you from success in a self-employed business. Then do your research by talking with others who have embarked on self-employment. Ask them for an accurate assessment of what it is like: the good, the bad and the ugly.
