You have decided to start a self-employed business and have hundreds of decisions to make before you can get started. Depending on what your business is, you will have to decide everything from where to operate your business to where you are going to find your first client. Be diligent about researching and checking off the items on your “to-do” list.
As you accomplish these tasks, it is important to tackle some mental tasks as well to align your expectations with reality. Sarah and Paul Edwards, authors of Making It on Your Own: Surviving and Thriving on the Ups and Downs of Being Your Own Boss, say that three main qualities are essential in order to make the transition to self-employment:

  • Creating, a new self-reliant mindset. You need to transform or shift your mindset from paycheck to paycheck, to relying on your own skills.
  • Having a direction and purpose. Understand and be willing to use the full scope of activities to get the job done. In other words, do the full range of what it takes to complete an assignment.
  • Becoming your own boss. As your own boss, you need to manage yourself, become self-motivated, and perform well under pressure, and deal with setbacks.
