Of course, actually using a vacuum isn’t a terribly complicated process. Turn on the vacuum, push the vacuum, store the vacuum. However, as straightforward as a vacuum may seem, there are certain things you can do to increase the effectiveness of your vacuum. Some things to keep in mind:
· Make sure the bag is properly fitted: If you use a vacuum with a traditional dust bag, make sure that it’s properly connected to the vacuum hose. You’ll otherwise end up with more dust in the air than on your floor.
· Remove metal objects from the floor: Tacks, coins, nails -- there are many things that your vacuum will pick up that might damage the vacuum fan, so take a look at your floor before vacuuming.
· Check your pile setting: Some vacuums automatically adjust to the height of a carpet or floor, while others allow operators to manually adjust brush depth. If your vacuum uses a manual adjustor, find a setting with which you’re comfortable.
Quality vacuums are relatively tough appliances in general, but if properly maintained they offer consumers an even longer use cycle. You’ll want to review the manual you received with your vacuum for specific maintenance instructions, but some general guidelines appear below:
· Frequent bag changes: Don’t wait until your bag (or bagless bin) is full. Replace the bag when it’s 2/3 full, and empty your bagless bin every two to three uses.
· Frequent belt replacements: It’s a good idea to check your vacuum belt frequently. Specifics vary between manufacturers, but a bi-annual belt replacement is a good rule of thumb.
