The upright vacuum market is highly competitive, so as a consumer you can expect to be regularly bombarded by television ads. Many of the ads are flashy and promise better suction, added convenience, or simply a lighter vacuum. While some of the ads aren’t actually misleading, it’s important to remember that your only real interest is in a machine that cleans your carpet without filling the air in your home with dust. While some of the highly advertised, expensive vacuums can perform that task, it’s not necessary to pay $700.00 for an effective upright vacuum. In fact, there are many upright vacuums in the $75.00 to $300.00 range that perform quite well. Consumer Reports tested a wide range of upright vacuums for cleaning power, ease of use and emissions control. The top three vacuums had price tags of $300.00 or less, and Consumer Reports named a $140.00 vacuum, the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra, as its choice for best overall buy.
In addition to price, pay close attention to the repair history and product reliability of a potential vacuum. Ask your retailer about the expected life cycle of any model in which you’re interested. Historically, how long does the model operate at a high level, and when does the model become irreparably ineffective? Additionally, ask about the warranties available and the estimated length of time between repairs. It’s extraordinarily easy to purchase a vacuum over the internet, but if you choose that route, make sure that you’ll have reasonably quick service and support available should your vacuum require repairs.
