Toasters Use/Maintenance

On the whole, toasters are very easy to use: drop the bread in, press the lever, and once it pops, pull out the bread. All you have to do to power the toaster is plug it into a wall outlet, and many toasters come with a red light that signifies when they are receiving power. To save energy, you can unplug the toaster, but as long as the lever isn’t pressed down, there is no danger from having the toaster plugged in.

Toasters can be a safety hazard, however, because they are a source of concentrated heat and electricity. If you are concerned about burning your fingers, buy a plastic toaster because they are less likely to burn you than are metal toasters. In any case, however, don’t stick foreign objects into the toaster while the toaster is plugged in. If your toast is stuck, don’t pull it out with a metal object (e.g. a fork), or a paper object, or your finger; unplug the toaster and then get the bread out.

Fortunately, there’s not much cleaning involved with a toaster. Wipe off the exterior from time to time to remove smudges, and take out the crumb tray to get rid of excess crumbs. If you do not have a removable crumb tray, unplug your toaster and dump it out over the trash can.

There’s no end to the items you can put on toast. Most people use the toaster most often at breakfast, when they toast bagels, or English muffins, or bread. Butter, peanut butter, honey, jam, and cream cheese, all taste good on toasted bread. Other people enjoy putting items such as olives, artichoke hearts, or meats on toast. Hamburger buns are another popular toasted item. Toast provides a tasty crunch, and the toaster provides the toast.
