A thermal cooler is also known as a thermos and has been an important item to many people for years. Sir James Dewar of Scotland developed the vacuum flask in the late 1800’s. Sir James Dewar was a physicist and a chemist, but was well known for his understanding and work with low-temperature phenomena. The vacuum flask he invented is known as the Dewar flask as well as a thermos. The Dewar flask is a container designed for storing hot and or cold substances. The device contains two flasks, which are placed one inside of the other. The vacuum flask that Sir James Dewar invented greatly reduced the transfer of heat, preventing any temperature changes, thus keeping liquids hotter for a longer period of time. This vacuum flask is also known as a thermal cooler. It was designed to keep beverages and foods hot and cold, whichever is needed. Although Dewar invented the Dewar flask to aid him in his work with liquid gases, consumers today use his invention for a much different purpose. Thermal coolers have been tweaked a bit since the 1800’s but consumers today continue to rely on this same basic principle.
