Western U.S. Skiing

Colorado, Utah, and California are the big names in Western U.S. skiing, but they are by no means the only names. Up and down the Rocky Mountains, you will find ski resorts with comparable skiing, but often smaller crowds and ski areas.

In the Southwest, New Mexico’s Taos Mountain Resort is one of the best resorts in the country, and the town of Taos has a lot of character itself. Don’t stop at Taos, though; there are several other resorts in the mountains of New Mexico, as well as some in Arizona.

North of Colorado are the slopes of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. The big-name Wyoming resort is Jackson Hole, but there are multiple great resorts and a fraction of the Colorado crowds. Idaho has eighteen resorts, including the famous Sun Valley, and the grand Grand Targhee (which is on the Idaho/Wyoming border). Montana likewise has a few popular resorts such as Bozeman and Whitefish, but there are also some huge but still relatively unknown resorts, including Big Sky and Big Mountain.

If you are willing to head closer to the Pacific Coast, you can ski the Cascade Mountains of Washington. Washington and Oregon both have great powder snow and several quality resorts from which to choose, including Washington’s Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass, and Oregon’s Timberline.
