Vail is arguably the most popular and largest single-mountain ski resort (thirty-four lifts and over five thousand acres of terrain) in the United States, so there is a little something for everyone on the mountain. The back bowls are especially famous among advanced skiers (they contain almost exclusively advanced terrain), and the Blue Sky Basin allows you to explore wooded areas of the mountain.
Vail also has a large ski village, but it doesn’t have the charm of some of the more historic resorts. In addition to its large tourist crowds, Vail is also pricey. A single day lift ticket at peak season costs $81 (a ten-day ticket cuts the per-day price in half).
Nearby Beaver Creek ski resort is much smaller than Vail but is relaxed and family-friendly. If you are a first-time skier, or if you want to ski in the Vail area without the hoopla of Vail itself, Beaver Creek is a good option.
