After you have taken the plunge and decided on the type of ski you want, next you will have to pick the right length. Previously, it used to be that you began on short skis and advanced to longer sizes the better you became. In the past, as an adult beginner, you would begin with something around 150-170 cm. The more self-assured you became, you would look for a ski your height plus 20cm. Today, however, with the invention of carving skis, everything is different. Short is now ‘in’. New skis are taken up to 20cm shorter than traditional ‘skinny’ skis.
When looking for length, remember that most carving skis should reach between your nose and forehead. Keep in mind, however, your level and weight as well as the type of skiing you want to do. Skis can only tell how heavy you are.
If you are a beginning skier and like to ski slowly, go with the shorter length. If you desire to ski fast and hard, turn little and retain better stability, then try a longer length. Ultimately, the length of your skis is going to be decided by the type of skis you are searching for.
