Wherever there is clear, still water there is a great place to snorkel. However, certain areas are more conducive to marine life than others, and there are factors that fluctuate on a day-to-day basis that can dictate which locales are the most active. One of the best ways to find the most active snorkeling sight is to ask the locals who snorkel. Dive shops and snorkel rental outlets should be helpful in providing this information as well.
Some tourist spots have become famous for their great snorkeling and abundance of marine life. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is probably the most famous site internationally with its 1430-mile coastline. The large coral reef has some coral structures that are as large as houses that provide a safe haven for an abundance of marine life. While snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef, you may even be able to spot migrating whales!
The Hawaiian Islands are another popular snorkeling spot. Rare Hawaiian turtles migrate between May and September and can be seen by lucky snorkelers who are in the right place at the right time. The water in Hawaii is crystal clear and the plankton that is native to the region attracts several species of exotic, tropical fish. The most popular snorkeling destinations in Hawaii are the Waikiki coastline, the Hanauma Bay and the Molokoni Crater Natural Preserve.
Snorkelers have always flocked to the Caribbean to see beautiful fish. The Virgin Islands are the most popular for great snorkeling, but the Cayman Islands, Antigua, Mexico and Curacao are famous for their multi-colored fish and various species of coral.
